  1. I had typical HSV symptoms: flu-like feeling and then vaginal ulcers.

Ever since then it’s been daily tingling/burning in genital area/vaginally. It is constant.

Slight pain with sex initially and then fine after a few seconds.
It’s more of the constant daily vaginal tingling and burning that I am worried about. And the fact that I had multiple vaginal ulcers at one time.

I have been tested for STIs and yeast and BV multiple times.

im wondering if it was an allergic reaction to something or Staph or Strep…I have been living as if I have HSV for years until my IgG and Western Blot came back negative recently and now I don’t know what could cause all of this.

  2. All of my symptoms aligned with herpes. I took Valtrex for 7 days after that outbreak and the outbreak went away which could just be a coincidence…..I also had gotten BV a month or two before the outbreak and did not react well to the cream antibiotic they gave me so I started doing apple cider vinegar and Epsom salt soaks daily…then the ulcers appeared.

my boyfriend at the time got canker sores (not cold sores) a lot inside his mouth and had preformed oral on me a week or two prior to the ulcers forming….so the doctor and myself originally thought it was GHSV1.

  3. Has anyone had a false negative for IgG blood work years after exposure?

I had ulcers one time 2-3 years ago, swabbed negative.

now years later I also have negative IgG blood work.

I am planning on getting the Western Blot test but wasn’t sure if anyone else has had a negative swab and negative IgG but had ulcers one time.

    Thank you!

  4. @Flowerteacher55 my doctor did swab the lesions during my outbreak 3 years ago and it came back negative but they said it might not have picked up enough to detect it and to just assume it’s herpes.

I did take antivirals for 7 days after that outbreak and it did make the ulcers go away…which could maybe be coincidental?

im just confused because for the past 3 years or so, I’ve thought for sure I had herpes…and now that I have the blood test results back, I am more confused.

The nurse I spoke to after I got my test results back recently said it’s not herpes if the tests are negative and that maybe it was just a weird thing that happened???

it seems strange that there isn’t another explanation that really fits.

  5. About 3-4 years ago I had what doctors visually diagnosed as GHSV.

they swabbed the ulcers and it came back negative for HSV1 and HSV2.

    No second outbreak since.

now, years later I decided to get IgM and IgG blood tests. Both came back negative.

So now I have a negative swab, negative IgM and negative IgG test…but had ulcers once.

How accurate would people say IgG tests are roughly 3-4 years after an initial “outbreak”?

  6. @Flowerteacher55 thank you so much for your advice and information.

I only had one “outbreak” 3-4 years ago but was told visually it was herpes.

swab test during outbreak came back negative, and then both my IgM and IgG tests 3-4 years later came back negative.

I am very confused because I haven’t had another outbreak since.

the on-call gyno nurse told me that the outbreak might have been something else that isn’t HSV and I should assume I don’t have it now??

I like your idea of telling partners that I had what appeared to be an HSV outbreak 3-4 years ago but have tested negative ever since…just so they have some awareness.

  7. So far I’ve had what visually looked like an outbreak 3-4 years ago…swabbed negative….negative IgM blood test and now an IgG test that I think the results mean negative too?

I am so confused because the when I had my “outbreak” I had all the symptoms (flu like feeling before, genital ulcers) and then tingling and “prodrome” symptoms that lasted 8 months after but no second outbreak…

I’m confused what this could mean or what I need to do/if I need to disclose to my new partners?

  8. Thank you everyone for explaining that to me!

I just got my IGG results back and it says <0.90 for HSV1 and HSV2.
Does that mean positive or negative?

The IgM tests said “negative” but this one doesn’t specify negative or positive.

  9. Edited: I just got my IgM blood test results back. It says negative for HSV1 and HSV2….and my swab culture was negative…..I know that IgM can be not accurate so I just took a IgG blood test today to see what that says…can someone explain to me how the IgG and IgM is different?

  10. @Flowerteacher55 thank you so much for the response!!

I am really hoping that when I do disclose they will be accepting like in your experience!

I know people with cold sores who never disclose but I feel like I cannot do that. Even though it’s such a hard thing to share with someone, I still feel like it’s the right thing to do.

  11. Hi everyone!

female, new to dating, never had to disclose before.

visually diagnosed with GHSV about 4 years ago….swab culture came back negative and I haven’t had another outbreak since that first one.

i am waiting on IgM blood test results any day now (but just found out they’re not really accurate)

I feel like I should disclose soon to a guy I am talking to before things get intimate.

any advice or suggestions or positive experiences with disclosure?

I am terrified, because you never know another persons stigma or knowledge or boundaries until you actually disclose.

    thank you!

  12. Thanks for everyone who responded…I got blood drawn on Tuesday, waiting for results…

.it was the “HSV 1/2 AB (IGM) IFA W/RFL TO TITER (REFELAB)” test…..does anyone know how accurate that test is? And typically how long did it take to get your results back?

  13. Has anyone had lesions and gotten them swabbed and it comes back negative for HSV1 and HSV2?

Doctor said visually it looked like HSV but I haven’t had another outbreak since the first one (2 years ago) and when they did swab the lesion it came back negative for both?

trying to navigate if this is normal...doctors keep saying blood tests are unreliable and just assume I have it?

  14. Wow I thought I was the only one.

since my GHSV diagnosis (1 year ago) I had intensely painful orgasms for about 6 months....now they’re getting better but still have a sense of sharp pain at the end of the orgasm....which is better than it was a year ago, where the entire orgasm was one long sharp pain.

  15. Just wanted to circle back here to update: it’s been exactly 1 year since my first (and only so far) outbreak.
my daily constant prodome symptoms have died down a lot!!!

it used to hurt to walk for the first 6 months and then gradually it got better.
now it’s like a mild irritation some days but nothing like it was before.

I think the more time that goes by, hopefully the better it will be!

  16. @lil devy never did the MRI, insurance declined it.

ive been going to pelvic floor therapy for about 3 months. Last week I felt a weird release and my hip pain level went from 6 to about a 2 which is a huge improvement.

we are focusing on my psoas muscle because that seems to be very tight on my right side (where I feel the pelvic and hip pain).

hoping it’ll help if I can strength and relax my psoas muscle! We’ll see...always searching for answers.

    how are you feeling????

  17. Genitally, my daily prodrome symptoms calmed down A LOT by month 9-10 (haven’t had a second outbreak yet).

I still have weird tingles randomly and vagina irritation randomly but nothing like in the beginning months....I literally felt like I had tears and burning daily for 6 months (hurt to walk) and then slowly started to calm down...not completely gone by month 10 but a lot better than before. I didn’t see an end in sight.

Now I have weird nerve pain in my lower abdomen and hip but it might be from tensing up my pelvis from being in so much pain for months

  18. @lil devy I really think for some people it takes months for things to feel normal down there...I’ve been swabbed for BV and yeast and trich multiple times since my diagnosis 10 months ago. Everything else is normal.

I’m keeping hope that things feel better after the 1 year mark...I’ll wait longer if I need to but I really don’t see this lasting forever. My genital symptoms were MUCH worse during the first 6 months. Some days it would feel like intense burning or cuts. It hurt to walk sometimes (with no outbreaks)....if I compare myself to how it was during the first 6 months...it’s so much better.

    when did you get diagnosed?

  19. @lil devy honestly, my vagina feels better lately. It’s taken months....however, I’ve had daily pelvic pain for about 4 months now and the last 3 times I orgasmed, it hurt a lot like shooting electrical currents instead of feeling good. I’m too scared to try to orgasm again...I’m hoping that will go away too after some time.
