If both locations for you are in fact HSV-1, then your genital HSV-1 will only shed about 3-5% of the time and is rarely passed from genital-to-genital sex. Oral HSV-1 does prefer to be around the lips, so if your primary site of infection was in your throat, it will most likely not give you many problems in the future after you've developed antibodies to naturally fight off future outbreaks (which takes 6 months to a year). And because the infection is in your throat, the possibility of transmitting that to a partner is much lower, too, since herpes tends to be transmitted via skin-to-skin contact/friction with the infected area.

[Oral and genital hsv1]

Hey guys,

I just recently found out I have ghsv1, and then a gut feeling told me to also get my throat swabbed as it was so sore and inflamed and that also came back as hsv1. How is this possible? Isn't it only supposed to affect one location? Has anyone else had experience with this? 

My massive concern now is that I can shed from both locations at any given time and also have recurrent obs in either location. So if I'm having a genital ob, I couldn't even perform oral sex on a partner until that passed? Any advice/help would be much appreciated. I'm really not doing well mentally right now. I had just come to terms with the ghsv1 diagnosis.
