Correlation between diet and herpes outbreaks?

Recommended Posts

Hello, just curious if anyone has noticed any correlation from their experience or others between diet and severity of herpes outbreak. For example if you are vegan or vegetarian do you experience less outbreaks or less severe than individuals that eat meat or did you transition and  notice a difference?  I am pescatarian, I eat fish maybe twice or 3 times a week. It’s been 6 months since I’ve been diagnosed with genital and oral hsv1 I have never had a visible outbreak just lip tingles/burning and itching down below. Is it too early for me to speak of could this be because of my diet?

Hard to say whether specific foods will give you more or less outbreaks since there would need to be a double-blind study to test that, or else it's just hearsay. No such studies are out there at least that I know of. However, there are plenty of folks who swear by the more lysine, less arginine thing, but I've never found a correlation for me. It's purely anecdotal based on the folks out there who say it works for them. Science hasn't given us the data we need in that arena to say it works.

The 2 major things that have given me the biggest shifts in cutting down on my outbreaks are: Staying healthy (eating healthy, exercise) and time. The first one is simply about keeping your immune system on the whole at peak performance. Healthy immune system = tip-top defense against anything that'll get you sick, including herpes outbreaks. The time piece is just built in ... the longer you have herpes, in general, the less and less outbreaks you'll have (in quantity and severity) since your body gets better and better at building natural immunity.
