Herpes Testing Question

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with herpes 12 years ago, but have had the virus much longer than when I was diagnosed.  I remember only 1 breakout  (which I didn't know what it was at the time) 4 years prior to getting confirmation with a Western Blot that I had herpes. I've been taking Valtrex for 12 years.

I decided 3 months ago to get tested again. So, for the past 3 months I've been tested 3 times and the results have come back negative. Does this mean anything? When I shed, is the viral load so low that I can't transmit the virus?

My last 2 relationships over the past 5 years I didn't use condoms. Both did a lot of research and educated themselves on the virus. Neither girlfriend contracted herpes.

I would love to get your thoughts and perspective on my test results, shedding, and transmitting the virus.

Thanks

@Mrbuster — Hey, thanks for sharing your story! This is a super interesting question, and you’re not alone in wondering what it all means for sure. Testing negative after years of living with herpes can feel confusing. Here’s the thing: the virus can still be present even if it doesn’t show up on some tests, particularly if it’s been dormant, and especially if those tests you're referring to are IgG tests (not as on point as Western Blot). Blood tests detect antibodies rather than the virus itself, and sometimes antibody levels can drop below detection levels, especially if you’ve been on suppressive therapy with Valtrex for so long. So while it doesn’t mean the virus is gone, it’s possible it’s just not as active in your system.

Your experience with partners not contracting herpes despite no condoms lines up with the reduced transmission rates we see with consistent antiviral use and a lack of outbreaks. Suppressive therapy like Valtrex helps lower viral shedding significantly, which can reduce the chances of passing it on. But, as you probably know, there’s always a small risk due to asymptomatic shedding—even if it’s rare.

It sounds like you’re in a good place with this, and your openness in relationships speaks to your honesty and care. Keep doing what feels right for you, and remember, even with a minimal transmission risk, being educated and informed is powerful for both you and any future partners.
