Acyclovir Suppressive Therapy Questions!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

First post! I am currently on suppressive therapy for oral HSV-1, 800 mg once a day. I have gone 4 years without an ob (and four years without knowing this site existed!!). But of recently, I have had 2 obs in 6 weeks. Has my acyclovir stopped working? Am I immune to it? Do I need to up my dose? I have caught myself taking more because Ive tricked my mind into thinking I need more.

I have a good diet, supplement with lysine, I do not smoke (I used to, but recently cut it out completely) and I drink occasionally.

I forgot for a while that I even had hsv and then these two have been a reminder that I do.

Im not ashamed of it, I have accepted it more and more after browsing the site. Glad to know you guys are out there!

Would love to hear some input/ answers to my questions!

Thanks!

Welcome friend!

First, why are you taking suppressive therapy for oral HSV1? Most don't, unless perhaps you are protecting a partner because you are practicing oral sex...

I wouldn't increase the dose, that's for certain. There may be many reasons you are starting to have OB's - stress, diet, hormones, who knows why you suddenly started having OB's. It may end up that it comes for a short while and goes and settles down again. I had a spell about 7 years ago where i broke out every month for about a year when I was going through a lot of stuff...now I can't remember my last, full-on OB.

You may want to think back about any diet changes you may have recently made. And you can try Abreva (an OTC treatment for cold sores)... which may knock it right down.

Thanks for the response!

I will keep the dosage the same. The best I can remember I was not eating the best around midterms and finals (a lot of mcdonalds and processed foods) so maybe that is it.

Can we become immune to antivirals? I have not been able to find much info on it!

By the way, I am protecting a partner hence the suppressive therapy.

I have not had luck with abreva in the past, I have not found a topical that works for me. But suggestions (natural and otc) are always welcome!!

Thanks!

As far as I know you can't become immune to anti-virals - it sounds like your diet and stress is the cause..

Here are some past discussions about alternative therapies ... have a look through them...there are lots of great ideas here :) You can never tell what will work for you. L-lysine is very popular and seems to help many on here.
