Hello all......so yesterday I got off of work early, was ready to start my weekend and then my phone rings riiiiiiight when I'm about to leave work......it's the wonderful MA from ob/gyn office delivering the news that I'm HSV 2 positive (HSV 1 was negative). IGG and IGM were both positive. I've only had sex twice in twelve months and have been with the same partner the last three years. Needless to say I am quite upset and need to be informed.......I have read so much on the internet and felt it was best to join this forum to ask some questions. Guys I have never had lesions below the waist.....the only questionable condition I have had are the occasional aphthous ulcer in my mouth or those inflamed taste buds on my tongue which I seldom get and have been getting since I was a kid (I have never had any on my lips and again HSV 1 was negative). The other thing is about 13 years ago I continually had outbreaks of tiny black, pustule dots on my fingers and palms.......these suckers itched and I was able to pop them. So the palm thing lasted for years and gradually subsided but I recall my palms would itch and then the next day I would see the black dots.......so I came across pics of people with herpes whitlow (I guess due to HSV2 ?). I'm so confused guys.............can I one day just develop lesions below the waist or is this HSV 2 the occasional ulcer I get in my mouth or the "inflamed taste bud" I get on my tongue? I told my partner about all of this and he is soooooo non-chalant telling me not to worry about it.......I'm starting to think this mf probably had it all along and never told me. Emotionally I am everywhere......today I cried, I laughed, I felt down, I felt a new beginning in life coming on..............I appreciate any help, answers anyone can give. Thanks to all!!!

@lookinup

First - Welcome :)

I have to be frank - I am not convinced that your previous issue on your hands is H... usually Herpatic Whitlow expresses as blisters and doesn't clear up as fast as you mention.

So it sounds like you have HSV2 genital ... but unless you have an OB you won't know. The ulcer on the tongue is very likely nothing to do with H ... HSV2 only occurs in less than 2% of all oral cases of H.

Regarding your partner - have you seen his STD tests? It's always best to exchange them both for your peace of mind now and to create an honest foundation for your relationship. Given that the IGG test came back + it means you had it at least 4 months.

Sadly you won't know for sure exactly where you have it but the odds are very, very high it's genital ... it's between you and your BF if you go on meds but either way, I'd suggest very strongly that you SEE his test before you go any further :/

First off I want to say thank you WCSDancer2010 for answering my questions. Secondly, I want to say that I read many of your responses to different users questions and you provide such supportive feed back. Your responses provided me with a level of comfort.

Although I've been dwelling on my results the last few days I feel like this is an opportunity for positive change in my life. As for the BF...I'm pretty disgusted with him due to the lack of support and the more I talk to him about this subject he absolutely repulses me due to his lack of interest to become educated about HSV 2. (He insists that my results are positive due to a childhood bout of varicella.) I will definitely remain abstinent until I find out what is going on with my body. This whole situation is an eye opener and I refuse to make the same mistakes that put me here in the first place. I have two more doctors appointments in June with different providers for retesting.

Oh, and another thing these are the results I received at OB/GYN apt:

HSV 2 IGM TITER: 1:20 (Abn:H)

HSV TYPES 1 & 2 IGG: HSV1 type specific AB: <0.90

HSV 2 type specific AB: 3.87 (Abn: H)

Can you please shed some light on these results?

Looks like you have had HSV2 for awhile and you are likely H1- ... the IGM is for recent (3-6 month) acquisition ... the IGG will only show once the antibodies are well established (4+ months)

Given that your BF doesn't want to get tested I would be somewhat concerned... you certainly didn't have it from the childhood varicella. I would tell him that you want him to get tested because you need to know if you need to go on antivirals or not ... maybe that will get him to do it. If not, you need to decide if that is a deal breaker or not for you. Sadly some people just would rather not know than get tested. For me, those people are scary... because they likely have reason to not want to know.

Thank you for responding WCSDancer2010. Well as much as I hate this diagnosis it sure has been a wake up call for me to take better care of myself. As far as the boyfriend goes it is pretty much over.....it was over a looooooong time ago...I will keep you posted about my doctors appointments results. Thanks for all your support and taking the time to answer our questions.
