When is it safe to have sex after a herpes outbreak?

Recommended Posts

I'm female HSV2 negative, male partner is positive. He just found out he has herpes, and we're trying to deal with it. He got a little blister last week on his penis where the head meets the shaft. He says all that's left now is kind of a pink area- like if you peel off a scab from a healed wound and there's new skin underneath. Is he still contagious at this point? I know he could be contagious at any point with asymptomatic shedding, but we're supposed to see each other Thursday and are wondering if we should hold off on sex for another week. Of course, no matter what, we always use a condom.

@Herry's right - use a condom and talk to your Dr about Supressive meds for YOUR protection... the regular (non-protected) risk for M-F transmission is 10% (double the risk for men) so it would be a good idea to get him on the anti-virals to cut that risk to 5% (or less) and condoms will reduce the risk even more...

There's TONS of great info on the following links - I'd cruise around them and learn all you can. Information is power and will help you to make your decisions with him about how to proceed. And good on you for standing by him. ;)

He's on 500g of Valtrex twice daily. I have been reading EVERYTHING from scientific journals to posts on this website and others. Doctors are clueless. When he found out he had it, he told the doctor that we had had genital/genital contact but not intercourse yet. Doctor said as long as there were no blisters there was no problem and I was safe. Of course, we all know that's not right. What is it with the misinformation about this disease? I swear, something that is SO prevalent, you'd think it wouldn't be this big mystery. Thank god he SPECIFICALLY asked for every std test under the sun or we would have been clueless. My doctor didn't test for it, I went back after my partner got his results, and my doctor STILL refused to test for it unless I had an outbreak. I had to go to a private lab to get tested. No wonder it's so rampant. smh.
