HSV-1 & HSV-2

I was diagnosed with HSV-1 & HSV-2 a month ago. My doctor wasn't very knowledgeable and told me to do research online. I found a lot of information about the two and I understand what the differences are, but what does it mean to have both? A nurse told me I may have already had HSV 1, which is quite possible since my mother suffers from cold sores. I've never had a cold sore. Could I have caught 1 and 2 at the same time?
