Herpes prodrome symptoms with no outbreaks?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm really just confused and stressed. I would be so grateful for any input.

I've had this virus for sometime now but for years it's only been mild small sores every few months, itchy but not painful. Then one day I got aching legs, a sore throat, intense itching and a pretty OBs, that was the last time. Now, a month or so later, I've had intense prodrome for weeks with no OBs!! My thighs ache, I'm tingling, itching, shooting pains. For the first week I was just expecting an OB. I'm going on week 3 of this with no blisters. Everyday I wake up and it's still there. I'm becoming so confused and depressed. I can't be intimate with my husband, I'm in continuous pain. All I can think about is herpes. Can someone tell me what's going on??

Should I expect an OB? Will this ever go away? Will it only go away after an OB? WHY after years of mild symptoms that barely affected my life am I have such extreme symptoms???

I don't take anti virals. Only vitamins.

Thanks. So you've had this? Did you get an OB eventually or did it just dwindle off?

Do you mean the nerves are fried from the last OB since it was a bad one, or just fried in general?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm feeling desperate.

I have prodomes with no ob. My initial ob with a couple blisters was in December and I've only had a papercut ob twice with on small tear each time.

So do your prodromes last a while then just fade off? I actually prefer getting a straight up OB, at least I know when it starts and when it ends.

What are your prodrome symptoms?

Yeah. It's really confusing. I don't know if tingles always mean shedding? Or if its just our nerves and sensations. It's new to me since I used to just get a few itchy sores with none if this other stuff. I've been having like a deep ache on my inner thighs, burning, really itchy spots, tingling, basically all of it!! Lucky huh? Lol.

I've been taking lysine and lauriciden. This is my first " OB" since taking lysine, it it possible the lysine is keeping the sores at bay, that's why I haven't got any yet?

So they anti virals really help huh? What are you on?

I had some lyrica (pregablin) samples from another issue. I just took one and it definitely helped with the nerve pain. Its nice to be able to forget about for a few hours.

I'm just wondering how long this is going to go on for. I've had tingling last for a long time between OBs but not this full blown pain and itching and no sores. So confusing!!

I read something on this site that said there's the shedding, where the virus becomes active again and when there's enough of the virus active on your skin, the result is blisters..so maybe these prodrome with no blisters just means the virus is there but there's not enough of it to cause the blisters...?? Idk!!!

@80schild I've been taking antivirals for about 2 months. Im taking generic valtrex suppressive for almost a month now and it's working better than acyclovir. I haven't had any type of ob on valtrex. When I was on acyclovir I had two small paper cut ob's that only had one small cut each time. I tried to not take anything for about two weeks and I got nervous because I didn't want to deal with an ob. But, I do have irritation that keeps coming and going. I've also noticed got my refill the other day it was by a different mfg and it seems to be working better. Not sure if it's that or my body may be finally fighting this virus better. I also take supplements daily

@80schild I just recently found out in December. I believe that's when I contracted the virus as well. I tried taking the meds as soon as I was off the treatment for my initial ob. I was originally given valtrex for suppressive therapy. At first I was so depressed I got sick and thought it was the meds so my Dr said I should stop meds and use the episodicaly. I started getting prodomes and got nervous and started taking acyclovir. I was on that 400mg 2xs a day. I had two paper cut ob's while on it and switched back to valtrex which I take once daily. When I first took acyclovir I was a little nauseous but I learned to take it with food. I do feel a little tired quite often since I've been taking the valtrex. You can ask me all the questions you want

Thanks so much.

I dismissed my initial OB because I thought it was an ingrown hair (couple years ago). My OBs were so mild and rare that I just assumed it was a pimple or irritation. It's only after the OB before this one ( or the one before, i cant recall) that I found out. Now it's just been relentless. I've been trying to go the natural route but its not worth it if I have to feel like this all the time.

Have you been told anything about the body creating antibodies and if medication interferes with that? I've read conflicting info.

@80schild I have. I asked a terri at westover heights in a paid question thread about me retesting since my Igg was 1.30. She said that if I retest to soon my antibodie level may still be low due to me taking the medication slowing down the amount of antibodies the body is creating.

Maybe you should try the medication and see if that might help you.

Given that you had a sudden increase in symptoms, do you have something going on that could be affecting your immune system? Herpes LOVES stress and it's a great "first responder" that can let you know when you are not taking good care of yourself ... in which case, your best bet is to do everything you can to remove whatever the stress is from your life ....

Thanks guys.@ WSCDancer. Now that you say that, I did have a couple of events with my ex and his lawyer bla bla, which did occur around the same time as that bad OB. then sone other stuff with my mother who i have an DVRO against. i felt like i was in control of my stress, but maybe not!!! I just thought it was meant to get better as time progressed??? It barely affected my life at all, before, now it's controlling my life. I do suffer from anxiety maybe that's flaring up again.

It's tough because the symptoms cause me to stress and feel depressed but I'm sure that makes it worse! Vicious cycle!

Can hormonal changes in woman have an affect? What about nutrition exercise etc?

Anyway, sorry for the life story, just thinking aloud, but I'm thankful because that could explain it.

The additional stress could definitely have contributed to the increased OB's ... I call Herpes a "First Responder" to the stresses in your life ... AND instead of allowing it to spiral you into depression, maybe try to learn to appreciate it when it comes up as a reminder that you need to take care of yourself and perhaps change some things in your life (or at least, find ways to let go of the angst that you are attaching to the events).

And yes, hormonal changes and dietary things can also affect OBs (because both can put stress on the body!)... some women get OB's with their period ... others in between (possibly when they are ovulating) ... whatever seems to kick the body out of balance can cause the OB's... so perhaps you can start to pay attention to what is going on in your life when you get them and then start to work on ways to let go of whatever emotions are going on at the time, or note what foods may be contributing, etc... in the end, H can HELP you to become physically and emotionally healthier ... IF you learn how to work WITH it :)

That's a great way to look at it. Thank you.

I've always let stress run my life and consume me so I appreciate this advice. The psychological side of H is hardest for me. I find myself looking at other people feeling like they are different than me because they ( in my mind) don't have it. It's challenging, so any way I can turn it into a positive is extremely helpful and important, to me.

The symptoms seem to be easy off now. The aching and itching is gone, just a tingle here and there or the occasional quick shooting pain. Still no sores though!

A few more questions!!! ( i should probably make s new post but just trying this way first)

Is L lysine really worth taking? Is there any evidence that it helps?

Also, is there any links or anything on here about how this virus operates? I jave so many questions about spreading, non sexual spreading, spreading to other parts of the body, how the body builds antibodies and how reliable that is...I could go on an d in. I had cold sores as a kid, I used to get them all over my mouth but I haven't had onein years and when I did, it was just a tiny paper cut type one that went away. Is that the same thing that happens with the genital version??????

So play this game: Look around a crowded room. Start counting ... 1,2,3,4,5,H ... 1,2,3,4,5,H ... because that will be the number of people in the room with genital herpes. Then count again,... 1, H,H,H,H, ..... 1, H,H,H,H, .. because that's the number of people with oral herpes (and thus, potential "givers" through oral sex). 🙂

There are tons of dicussions on here about L Lysine ... you can use the search feature to find some... but in general, like everything "Herpes", it works wonders for some, not so much for others. Probably depends on how well your body processes it from food and also how much arginine and lysine you are consuming...

There's TONS of info on here about how the virus works!!! Again, the FAQS section and Search buttons are a great place to start and then ask for clarification if you need it, but I'll give you a head start with some links 🙂

Oh - and yes, Cold Sores ARE HSV1 oral - and 50% of all new genital cases are HSV1 genital from oral sex ... and both can appear in several forms ... blisters or "papercuts" are the two most common ...
