Shedding likelier right after breakout? When should sex be "safe" following a breakout ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am very new to this all. I just learned that my new girlfriend has herpes. About a week ago she felt that she was gonna get an outbreak and went to the doctor to get some medicine, which I think prevented the outbreak or lessened it greatly.

How long after all symptoms are gone are we back to "safer" territory? Also, because she took the medicine (some antibiotics or something, I'm not on top here unfortunately) are we perhaps in a even safer period now as if she'd take medicine all the time like some do?

Extra : I'm getting tested myself, unfortunately the healthcare system here is a bit slow so that will take some time. We did have unprotected sex for some time prior to me knowing she has herpes. I'm just gonna be rational about how the situation is at this point instead of what should have been said / done etc.

Thanks for all replies!

If she takes antivirals daily, it reduces transmission rates by half. She has to be on the antivirals for about 5 days to get the full effects of reducing transmission. I'm not sure there's a clear answer about when to have sex after an outbreak. At least not that I've read or heard of. Definitely not before the symptoms have completely cleared.
