Transmission without skin to skin contact

If I touch a sore and then use a body butter without washing my hands, does the body butter need to be thrown out? Can transmission happen if I use someone's towel to dry my hands? Can the virus live outside the body?

"The herpes virus does not survive outside the body for more than about 10 seconds, and although it can survive for slightly longer in warm, damp conditions, it dies very quickly once exposed to the air."
