Taking acyclovir, 400mg twice daily

Recommended Posts

Taking 400mg aciclovir twice daily, foolishly unprotected sex, think no outbreak but then remembered small cut on bottom (went to the toilet, a little blood on tissue), this has happened before, but getting worried that this was ob, no blisters etc, how infectious am I? (female having sex with male)

If you have sex during an active outbreak, you're the most infectious than at any other point since outbreaks are when the viral shedding load has reached its max. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a definite that you passed herpes to him, but it definitely ups the chances. The good news is that taking meds lessens your viral shedding by half and it's harder to pass herpes to men simply because we have less mucous membrane to contend with, so therefore less "access" for the virus.

(And FYI, there's not a specific transmission rate documented since it's unlikely that subjects will have sex with their partners during outbreaks in the name of science.)

Best way to get a definitive diagnosis is to wait 12-16 weeks and have him take a Western Blot test to test for antibodies in his blood (if he hasn't had an outbreak in that timeframe, of course).

Hope this helps!
