Here’s what’s happening to me - is it herpes?

Recommended Posts

I was told in May that the person I used to date might have HSV. Not too long after that, I started getting raised, itchy bumps on my thighs. Since then, I have a constant itch in my groin, random white heads down there, random raised flesh spots, and tiny pin prick-like sensations. Sometimes I can see a cluster or red spots beneath the skin, but they never come up to the surface. I also have a constant itch on my anus. My scrotum has been red (and sometimes itchy) for months now. Through all of this, no ulcers or open sores with scabbing areoccurring.

I do not have pain when I pee nor do I have discharge.

The girl I’m currently seeing  and I both had colds, and our lips starting tingling, and we developed white bumps beneath the skin of the top lip. However, through all of this, no sores have ever appeared, but my lips are constantly tingling/numb. The Dermatologist said it's Fordyce spots, but could not explain why my lips tingle and my girlfriend contracted the exact same thing at the exact same time. This girl also has constant itching at the entrance to her vagina after sleeping with me.

I've showed my Primary Care doctor and Dermatologist photos tracking the symptoms, and they are not convinced it's HSV. My blood work has come back negative, and the doctors can't explain why the girl I'm seeing is experiencing the same lip symptoms as I am.

Everyone is telling me it’s in my head. How could all three of these things be happening in place where HSV lives, and I don’t have it.

Has it been 3-4 months from exposure? It won’t show up in the blood for some till that 3-4 month mark

I had blood work down 4 months after suspected contact. The girl I'm seeing now should be getting blood work this week. She has also said every day she feels nauseated. Speaking for myself, I feel extremely tired every day.

Usually if you have it you test positive within a few months. Some people get tested using western blot which idk much about . If you search it on this site you can learn more about it through other discussions. I was negative with blood test but positive culture (tested a lesion) then about three months after tested positive in blood test. I had all the flu like symptoms during my outbreak. It was a nightmare. I would continue to be your own advocate and look into maybe getting tested again in a few more months.

best of luck!

I recently had flu-like symptoms, but no outbreak with sores that scab over.

Did you flu-like symptoms include the sores?

@blurneworder my eyes ached when I would shift them, wrestles leg syndrome, fever, fatigue, achy body, then about a week later I had the blisters all along the tear I had (from sex) and all around my anal, and a couple on my thighs. It was very painful. I had to use a surgical glove and lather up with lidocaine to go #2... obviously everyone is different and some have very mild outbreaks. Some say it can be like a yeast infection, all depends on the person and how they react to the virus.

ive also had muscle spasms the entire time that were pretty bad but are starting to get a lot better. The neurologist seems to think the spasms were just a reaction to the virus and getting used to it.

Update:

I now have tingling in my left hand and I'm in a constant state of imbalance and slow thinking.

I had to go to the ER last week and requested a swab of any area that may or may not have been ideal for it. I asked for IGG bloodwork.

I still have itchy, red bumps showing up in my groin on the sides and just above the shaft of my penis. They itch, and when they are not present, my nerves along my groin burn.

Update:

Negative IGG 5 months after suspected contact. Negative swabs on groin, butt, and on a fever blister in mouth.

Despite all of this, I’ve developed nightly mouth bleeding from unknown source. It hurts to breathe deep and feels as if my throat has something painful in it.

I still have itchy bumps in my groin, there are small bits of red skin on my penis foreskin, the head of my penis has patches of red, my shaft gets small cuts, my mouth gets small cuts, and my eyes burn and itch.

My Optometrist suspects I might have ocular herpes in both eyes. She tested, but did not see the normal herpes results, but says the small bit of damage she could see might be from herpes. She said other patients have had similar problems to me, and they eventually had herpes.

Just curious, how many weeks did you have your first blood test done that was negative, that was negative, and do you know your values? I hit 7.5 weeks post exposure last week, did blood work, and it’s maintained the same value, 0.06. Both my doctor and my obgyn said that even if it was still negative, if I did have hsv2, the values would of at least started to go up by now, even if just slightly. So I’m curious about others, when they got tested, and what their values were. I was tested at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 7.5 weeks, and I’ll go back at 12. Still stressed, even though both my doctor and obgyn are saying at this point to not worry.

It seems like you're pretty determined to have herpes.

Some days it feels like it.

Until someone has any other ideas, I don't know what else to think it could be.

This all happened after I was dating someone for a month who decided to tell me after we had sex/oral that she might have HSV. I asked why she thought that, and she said she gets pimples on her vagina, which I later learned can be symptoms of HSV. Not to mention, another girl I was seeing at a different time later on had the flu when I did, and we both developed white bumps on our lips that burned and tingled. She also had itching in her vagina like the itching I do in my groin.

I still get lip tingling and itchy groin to this day.

Ishmael, if you think I don't have herpes, than what could be doing this to me?

I delayed testing because the girl I thought gave it to me said she was negative. This was before I knew anything about HSV blood testing. My first test was 3 months after initial sexual contact. No values were given other than <.90.

I had blood work done again twice at 5 months after initial sexual contact.

Only one location gave me values 5 (months), and the others said there were no values to give me.

My levels 5 months later were

HSV-1/2 IgG 0.16

HSV 1/2 IgM 0.21

I think a lot of this is in your mind. I'm a hypochondriac and when I think I have something, I feel like I have all these symptoms of it. Sometimes your balls will get itchy dude. That's what balls do. You seem to think you have it in your throat and on your genitals at the same time, which is rare. You've also had multiple blood tests that have come back negative. Do I actually know what's wrong with you? No. It's not herpes though.

But I doubt it will matter how many tests or doctors tell you you don't have herpes, you will still think you do because of your health anxiety.

I understand where you are coming from with this.

The feelings I have of fatigue, dizziness, fullness in my ears, itchy bum, itchy groin, red itchy scrotum, burning mouth, pain in eyes, nerve pain in hand and foot, and constant cuts on my lips and penis are definitely not in my mind.

My body is going through something, and the symptoms I'm having match those felt by people with herpes. Again, all of this happened after unprotected oral and vaginal sex.

I want you to be the correct one in this discussion, and if you are, I will tell you.

A lot of that doesn't match herpes though and a lot of it can be attributed to other things like jock itch. Also, you would be quite the case study to have genital herpes, herpes on your face, herpes in your mouth, and herpes in your eyes and then test negative at five months. Like, unheard of.

Negative swabs, negative blood tests. How will you know that you don't have herpes if those test don't make you think you don't have herpes?

What other diseases have you thought you have over the course of your life? This isn't your first rodeo, right? Most of mine were cancer.

I’ve been healthy all of my life, so no thoughts like this have ever occurred.

I disagree with what you think, as I’ve talked to others like me who had symptoms like these and eventually tested positive.

Tomorrow I find out if I need to see a specialist for the eye pain. Again, my Optometrist suspects herpes.

I don’t think it would be odd to have herpes in those places. Face and genitals are easy to contract, and who knows, maybe I touched a part of my body that was shedding and then touched my eye or maybe it started spreading to there from the mouth.

Some people have only tested positive through swab, assuming they get it swabbed at the right time.

The nerve pain and tingling lips definitely match herpes as do the areas I feel itching and find bumps in.

Okay, so what test at what time will be conclusive to you?
