How long after getting herpes did you get your first outbreak?

For me, many months. But for most, it happens within a few weeks.

My then-girlfriend told me the day after we had unprotected sex that the discomfort she was feeling was actually her first outbreak. (She had cheated on me with an ex over Christmas break.)

Oh no I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm convinced that the man I'm still seeing gave it to me, and he might be unaware he has it. My immune system is not great and I had my first outbreak about 10 days after we had unprotected sex. The man I was with prior to him was my boyfriend for almost 2 years and I never had an issue. I really care for the man I'm seeing and I'm newly diagnosed in Dec 2018. I'm in turmoil over having this almost daily. I feel like I can't breathe sometimes, and at first I never thought anyone would ever want me again.

It was about a month for me to have an outbreak, and looking back between transmission and the first OB I was having "cuts" I attributed to being dry during sex and tingling in my thighs. I had no clue it was anything to worry about and was SHOCKED when I was diagnosed!

Mine took about a week then I broke out, I got sick with some mild flu symptoms.

Same here.. I'm pretty sure the man who I think gave it to me is unaware he has it. It hit me hard, I had the flu symptoms and very painful sores. When diagnosed I cried because I'm not promiscuous at all...then I fell into a depression. It's been a very difficult road.

Cwgrl100...When did your "cuts" appear after transmission?

Me to! My ex knew he had it and just never told me. When I confronted him he said oh yeah I got bumps! I’m like why wouldn’t u tell me.. he didn’t care that he destroyed my life and that’s probably the hardest part for me because at first I thought after I got I had him by my side to help me get through it and I wouldn’t be alone and then he turned around and left me and went back to his giver. It’s been over 8 mths now and every day is still hard because I have to accept being alone because nobody wants this crap and I don’t blame them. It absolutely sucks and it causes such a depression more then just getting the outbreaks u suffer every day.

It's a very difficult diagnosis for sure. I'm learning self care and trying to remain positive. The crazy thing is the man who I think gave it to me I actually care about very much, and I truly don't think he would have passed it to me if he knew about it. I've asked my ex boyfriend to get tested and if it comes out negative then I know it was him who gave it to me. Now that I understand this diagnosis a lot more, and I'm learning it's really not as bad as the "stigma" says it is. It just makes you feel less than. I'm doing my best to try to remain the happy and confident woman I was before. At the end of the day if someone will not love you because of H, than it's probably best that you don't move forward with that person. I want someone who will love me fully and completely despite my H diagnosis. If I have to wait I will. Meanwhile we need to take care of ourselves and try to remind ourselves we are still the same person as we were before H diagnosis. It's not the end of the world, and we don't need someone else to make us happy. We do need someone who will support, and love us for exactly who we are.

  • 4 weeks later...

My outbreak happened almost immediately. We had sex, the next day I felt like I had a yeast infection. 2 days later I was severely inflamed and in loads of pain. 2 days after that sores popped up. 3 days after that I was at the doctor getting tested, and 2 days after that I got the positive results. This seems so fast compared to other people but I know the timeline perfectly because it was my first partner in years and I was clean before him. My outbreak actually led to him learning he had it as he was asymptomatic and had no idea until I told him what was happening to me.

I had gone home for winter break from college my sophomore year and seen an older guy I really had feelings for in my home city. Once I came back to school, about a month later, maybe six weeks, I had the worst flu I’ve ever had. Except it wasn’t the flu it felt like death and it was just so unlike any other sickness I had ever experienced. The week after I started to feel better I thought I had a typical yeast infection, maybe a cut or ingrown hair too and was due for a gyno checkup. She did a swab on what felt like the “cut” I guess it was actually a sore and bingo! HSV type 2, genital. I called him after the appointment and he wasn’t surprised. I asked if he had it and he said he didn’t know but wasn’t going to get tested and I haven’t spoken to him since.
