Not diagnosed with herpes. Scared to face the truth. Obvious herpes symptoms — Something else?

Hi Seraphitum!

(I thought this was already posted a few days ago and replied on, no? Did it get mistakenly deleted and then reposted? Hm, maybe I'm having deja vu all over again.) ;)

By the sound of it, it sounds like a near-outbreak, but there's no way to know for sure without a test. The interesting thing about herpes, since it's a virus, is that a lot of its symptoms can seem like you're coming down with the common flu. If you don't have an actual active outbreak with sores that can be cultured with a swab, then the blood test is the next way to go.

So I'm with Kuro85. Get tested for herpes using either the IgG test or the Western Blot test. Denial is a funny thing. It keeps us in the grey area of the unknown where we have no proof one way or the other, so in a way it feels more comfortable, but in the back of your mind, you're worrying, wondering. And that's burning away valuable energy that you could be putting toward something way more deserving (like living an awesome life despite herpes). :)

However, just one of the interesting points about testing for herpes through blood tests (if there's not a visible outbreak — if there's an active outbreak, it's easy to get it swabbed and tested that way) ... It takes 12-16 weeks for enough antibodies to be present in the blood stream to show a positive result, so if you've had sex within the past 12-16 weeks, then you might have herpes but the blood test will turn up a false negative. Make sense?

Here are a few articles on the blog with all the specifics you need to get the answer and stop the worrying:
