I was diagnosed via IgG with HSV2 in 2008. At that time, my then doctor (I no longer have) said this happens a lot with people who have no symptoms coming up positive, and if I get an outbreak, I can call for Valtrex. My husband had HSV2 as well, so I accepted that answer. And (from what I've thought) I haven't had an outbreak. Also, we continously had unprotected sex with neither of us medicated.
I am now divorced and dating someone HSV2 negative. I would just never forgive myself if I transmitted to him. I talked to both my gyno and internal medicine doctors, and NEITHER would prescribe antivirals as suppression therapy. They said it was standard of practice to ONLY prescribe them for outbreaks, not for long term use. I asked about it reducing shedding and with the use of condoms, reducing the risk of transmission, and it fell on deaf ears. I was also told the blood test doesn't confirm herpes, only a culture of a lesion, so come in if I get one. By that time, it could be too late!
I remember a few times in the past 6 years shaving and then immediately getting 1 or 2 itchy bumps in the same place each time. I now think those may have been outbreaks and not irritation from the razor. To say the least, they were extremely minor and I never had pain, tingling, aches, flu like symptoms, etc. I haven't had one in quite awhile (I can't even remember when the last one was.) I would've never thought I'd be hoping for an outbreak to get taken seriously, but I've started shaving again in hopes I'll get the bumps and nothing so far.
Does anyone have suggestions on what I can do to get an Rx??
And what are the transmission rates, female to male, with an asymptomatic person diagnosed for more than 6 years and only using condoms? We are both healthy, eat right, exercise, don't get sick, no drugs but social drinkers. I take Vit A and C, Olive Leaf Extract, Zinc and Super Lysine daily.
