If both of you have the same type genital HSV, you can't reinfect each other or get "double herpes." You should be fine from a transmission standpoint, but I dated a girl with HSV who could not have sex when she had an OB, too painful. So maybe the comfort of your wife may be something you should consider.

Most condoms do not contain spermicide. Maybe you are allergic to the lubrication? Unlubricated condoms are available. Maybe you are allergic to latex? Polyurethane and sheepskin condoms are available. There are dozens of different condoms, I'm sure you can find one that does not irritate you.
The sheepskin sound gross, but as a guy I find them the most comfortable and sensitive. Only downside is they cost several dollars each.

I think you disclosed at an appropriate time, being that he had shared something personal that could have been a deal breaker for you. I don't think it's fair that you accepted his alcoholism (what if he relapses and becomes violent and assaults you?) but he could not accept you with HSV. I'm sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately the stigma with genital HSV is huge, and public opinion polls I have seen show that herpes is a deal breaker for most people. I am an independent attractive 30 yr old guy with no kids and a good job and I too have faced rejection. But I have also had several great relationships with women who accepted me. Rejection stinks but you can't give up. I'm sure you are a sexy (everyone with HSV is sexy, how did we get it in the first place?) gal with many good things going for you- I'm sure you will find a good man one day. There are dozens of success storied on this site, and literally every single one is a case of a female finding a good man who is accepting. Good luck.

Yes agreed. It is a complete paradox that exists because of the ignorance of the public. Oral HSV-1 is not stigmatized, and although more contagious in the oral region, we do not require disclosure for oral HSV-1 infections. Genital HSV-1, the EXACT same virus, is less contagious yet we require disclosure and is highly stigmatized by society. This probably mostly due to the fact most people are unaware that HSV-1 can be transmitted via oral sex. Combine a complete inadequate sex education program in the US with our antiquated ideas about sexual tabooism, and you have a perfect storm for stigma and judgement.

The reason I say do not put them in a vitamin bottle is because acyclovir tablets do not look like vitamins, and if an officer happened to look, it would appear much more suspicious than the pharmacy-issued prescription bottle. Millions of people travel with prescription meds every day, no officer is going to raise an eyebrow about a legal prescription bottle with your name on it.

Don't put them in a vitamin container. Leave them in the original prescription bottle. Police will not question you about your legal prescriptions. Besides, they probably wouldn't know what acyclovir is for anyway.

I didn't find the sketch offensive, but the last skit I saw her do also involved STDs. Not really gut busting humor IMO.

The NHANES studies took blood samples from thousands of people who also completed a questionnaire. They asked questions like "have you ever been diagnosed with genital herpes?" "Have you ever had symptoms of genital herpes?" and the like. They found that 16.2% of the general population tested positive for HSV 2, but by checking this data against the accompanying questionnaire, 80% were unaware of it. The study was actually broken down by demographics, you can find it online. If memory serves me correctly, infection rates were highest in older black women (~50%), and lowest in younger white men (~5%). Pretty interesting.

If you come back positive for HSV 2, and I were you, I would tell her soon. You've known her for a year and dated for 4 months, so I don't think waiting until March will change much. That way, no one's time gets wasted, and you aren't agonizing for a few months wondering if she will accept or reject you.
If you come back positive for HSV 1, then ditto what Dancer said.

Sex ed for me consisted of a one hour presentation during 7th grade (mid 90s for me) science class that covered AIDS and teen pregnancy, but mostly teen pregnancy. When I was Dx'ed 9 years ago at age 21, I had literally probably heard the word "herpes" probably twice in my life, and of course knew nothing about it. Our education system is HORRIBLE when it comes to STD prevention/information. I feel like the system has failed and continues to fail. I live in the Deep South if it makes a difference.

So sorry to hear you are struggling. Have you tried taking meds? Anti virals to control H, and I have heard of doctors prescribing narcotics to help females with the physical pain. I know it's easier said than done, but you just can't let this virus get the best of you mentally. You kinda have to have a "fuck you herpes" attitude about it. You may even want to try anti depressants if you are severely depressed. I've never taken them, but I hear they really help some people. I assume you are fairly young, and you say you have money issues, have you considered asking your parents for help with medical expenses? You will make it through, I promise. I've had this shit 9 years, and the mental and physical effects subside with time.
I too am an avid waterfowler. I live in coastal Alabama, and our season just opened Thursday. My friend and I had a good day, limiting on gadwalls and mottled ducks. We also made our annual trip to Louisiana earlier this month, and we did well there too. Where do you live? What kind of ducks y'all shoot? We kill mostly gadwalls, teal, pintails, mottled ducks, and some divers down here. I think it's cool as hell you like to duck. I wish like hell I could find a girl who enjoys it, most can't take the cold and wet. Anyway, good luck with y'all's season!

Dancer, I'm quite sure men can be just as mean. It's not my intention to turn this into a men vs. women thing. I've just noticed in any setting (work, social, or otherwise) when herpes comes up, women tend to have a more visceral reaction, while men tend to chuckle, shoulder shrug, and change the subject. Clearly, society as a whole is grossly ignorant about this virus.

Noticed this as well. Females seem to be especially vicious about herpes, with "omg ewww gross!" the prevailing reaction. Sorry you gals got your feelings hurt.

Ditto what dancer said. The 19-30 is the most active sexually group, combined with the fact that established infection rates are lowest in the younger group, and voila, most NEW Dx's occur in the younger age brackets.

Thx for the tip. Big fan of classic rock too. Not many of them still touring. I've seen john fogerty from CCR, Willie Nelson, Bon Jovi, Gregg Allman, Steve miller, and Jimmy Buffet. Missed an opportunity to see ZZ Top perform, still regret that.

Oh and I love going to concerts and live music too. Been to all the major music festivals down here numerous times- bonnaroo, gulf coast music festival, bayfest, hangout fest, springfest, voodoo fest, etc. North Mississippi Allstars played in a small venue near home a few weeks ago but I missed it cause I had to go out of town for a wedding, damn.

Grew out of partying about that time, too. Most people would probably characterize me as a country boy, but I don't really think of myself as fitting any stereotype. Listen to all kinds of music, but at heart I'm a rocker. Grew up listening to 90s rock. Smashing pumpkins, nirvana, bush, etc. I like to hunt, fish, watch sports, and drink beer with friends. Travel when I get the chance. I haven't played any video games since N64, it doesn't hold my interest any more. Nice to meet y'all.

New shingles vaccine 97% effective in preventing shingles as shown in a large phase 3 study.
What's so unique is this is the first subunit vaccine that has been successful, after dozens of failed subunits (including several for HSV). Also contrary to historical vaccine development, this vaccine is vastly superior to its live virus vaccine counterpart, which is only 50% effective in preventing shingles. After numerous failed subunit HSV vaccines, there was growing concern that the only path to a successful HSV vaccine would be the live virus route (of which there are none in clinical trials- all of the current HSV vaccine ex in clinical trials are subunit except ACAM 529, which is a dead virus vaccine). This shingles vaccine proves that a subunit HSV vaccine may indeed be possible, especially considering HSV and shingles are closely related. The founding company, Agenus, has a HSV vaccine in clinical trials now that uses the same adjuvant and is based on the same premise as its shingles vaccine. This is great news for all of us here.
