Not sure about the symptoms as I've just had my first outbreak.
As for your last part, I think it would be advisable to let him know. I just got it from someone who did not disclose anything until after the fact. I think said correctly, and with proper information, it isn't as big as it seems.
If you transfer and then tell them after (like in my situation), it is a lot worse. Just my two cents on that from personal experience.

gHSV1 to gHSV1 is pretty rare (at least from what I read), and you were on antivirals?

I think a handful of times hanging out should let you evaluate if it could ever go further. If it could on your end, then probably best to do it before everyone is ready to go and then it is thrown out there.
It isn't fun either way. This is only hypothetical. I haven't even done it myself yet. I'm sure those that have experience can give better advice.

You are asking the wrong person for disclosure. I haven't done it yet myself. I'd say a couple weeks in. Hanging out 3-4 times perhaps. Before it gets too serious. If it is still casual, I think both sides don't feel wounded as much that early.

I think you waited a bit too long to disclose. He probably felt a bit betrayed two months in.
You also have to accept that some people won't be okay with it.

I just don't see how herpes is still considered such a big deal by people. If you make it in to more of a big deal than it needs to be, then it will become that big deal.
Information and misinformation. It isn't curable, which makes it sound scarier. If you've seen some of the pictures online there is a lot of "scary" pictures which often don't reflect most outbreaks. People don't know they have it, or don't equate cold sores to it. If more people knew they had it, there would be a lot more acceptance and maybe more motivation for a cure.
Heck, I'm bent out of shape over oHSV1.

Yeah, I have type 1. Doc seemed to say it was not a big deal.
Well there are some good resources available. I have been using this and reddit, and been finding a ton of informative stuff.

Embarrassing more than anything. It also screwed up my relationship as she 1) figured everyone had it 2) didn't have sore, so figured she couldn't spread it 3) not pleased with my reaction over the whole thing.
Plus, all the fun details like the shedding I've learned about, etc, doesn't seem like fun.

Why is it that HSV2 has the risk to HIV and HSV1 doesn't seem to?

For herpes? Fever, sweats, couldn't eat, bumps on face around mouth which turned into sores. They eventually crusted over. Didn't **look** like herpes per my doc, but the other symptoms are what made him think that. Had a swab done, HSV1 oral. This was within a week of the sex.
Took longer than normal to heal, doc thought at first bacterial follictulitis (sp is off I know) and got me on antibotics. When that didn't go away, he asked if I had given oral sex and I had mentioned yes, and said maybe it was fungal/candida. The anti-fungal stuff seems to be working.

You can. I got oral herpes and doc thinks I could have gotten a little bonus on my upper lip/mouth area as far as skin irritation due to candida (however you spell it) from giving her oral.

Doesn't sound like herpes, but it could be, mine was atypical as well. Get checked for a yeast infection?

IDK the facts, but I do recall reading that HSV1 genitally is less likely to reoccur than HSV2. Shedding is lower as well. I recently acquired HSV1 oral. I've been trying to inform myself as best as possible.
Don't quote me, but my understanding is that gHSV1 is preferable to gHSV2.

To my knowledge, all I have is oral HSV1, which I just acquired end of Jan. More sores are nearly healed, and I was on antivirals for two weeks. The biggest issue is that I have been unable to shave. I tried twice, and got nasty razor burn around my mouth and chin and some inflammation between my nose and mouth. I am on antibiotics since it was so bad, and hopefully I can clear it up and shave on Sunday for Monday.
My biggest concern is that I contracted something genitally and don't know, but the more I read that seems unlikely and typical of those that have never been exposed to either version of it.
I'm actually checking out of relationships for a bit after this one. My panicky reaction to all this and the requesting additional testing kinda ruined it all. She had previously been tested, and culturally a cold sore wasn't a big deal to her and she hadn't one in years and didn't know she could give it without it being there. I think it was an unfortunate set of circumstances that gave it to me, but the whole thing put such a strain on it that I think unfortunately it is dead in the water.
As far as future relationships, I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't want to give it to someone orally, and I definitely am uncomfortable with the idea of giving oral sex now because it could transfer there. Plus, the shedding even with no visible signs makes me freak out (which is a bit of an overreaction on my part admittedly).

As hiking said, it is usually around the outbreak. I thought I spread it to my hand as well, but it was not the case and the doc was sure it was fine. It is not that easy to transfer as you fear on your own body is what he told me. Wash your hands after contact, and the longer you have it the less likely you are to spread it. He said after the first, very unlikely to spread it.

Yeah, I embarrassingly took a pic and sent it to a buddy who's wife is a nurse. She said it looks like a cyst or ingrown hair and supposedly got some other opinions as well.
I tend to think of the worst case scenario. My friend jokes hypochondriacs shouldn't have sex, which is why I show my std results to the person and they show me theirs. I figured since I got it orally, I must have contracted it genitally.
Despite her being tested before, I went from oHSV1 ---->Ch/Gon/Syp that was neg ------> HIV that was neg (had her get tested too) -----> gHSV1 because of bump, seems neg -----> still wonder if I contracted gHSV2 bc all that asymptomatic crap scared and scarred the beejesus out of me.
I can half chuckle about it, but learning more really messed with my head. Plus, I had been cautious before, and the Doc and her cavalier attitude towards it freaked me out.
I know people will shake their heads over it. Kind of like someone with Hodgkins vs Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Okay not that bad, but while similar, differences as well.

hi sbrown! I have oHSV1, which I just acquired about a month ago. My understanding (I'm not a medical person, and this is just form what I now recently gathered myself) is that once you have the antibodies, the risk is very low of acquiring it genitally. However, I believe this takes months, 4-6 if I remember correctly.
Once you have the antibodies I think it is pretty safe, though I'd think open sores would be the highest risks even w/ the antibodies.
I've also read genital to genital transmission is very low of hsv1, but there also aren't a lot of studies on it either.
