Initial Outbreak

Recommended Posts

I contacted herpes on Jan 1st. I officially found out I had herpes from my doctor 2 weeks ago. I had my initial outbreak with sores Jan 3rd and it lasted 2 weeks. The sores are all gone but the itching hasn't gone away. It's been two and a half months now. Some days it's fine and other days it's unbearable. I was wondering how long everybody's initial outbreaks were. I have HSV 1 not HSV 2. Is this still my initial outbreak or is itching just part of the virus?

Hello and Welcome!

Well the thing is, everyone has a different experience with their initial OB's with herpes ... for some they have one OB (and 80% never have one that they recognize as an OB at all!) and they never have an issue again or it may be months/years before it comes back. Others can take weeks, months, or even a year to start to feel close to 100% normal.

You sound like you are having what are known as "prodromes" - non OB symptoms caused by your body battling the virus ... the virus lives in the nerves so this battle can cause irritation to them while it's going on.

Do what you can to learn about things that trigger YOUR prodromes. Pay attention to your stress levels, what you eat, and what activities you are doing ... over time you may find that one or two things makes it worse. That will help you to help your body to fight it ... some find that sugar, coffee, chocolate, and nuts affect them - for others, none of that will cause so much as a tiny tingle. Keeping the area cool and dry will help too. I'll post a few links for trigger info for you ...

For now, take each day as it comes and try not to worry about "long term" while you are in this phase... I've had it 35 yrs and I can tell you that over time you can learn to live with it and it will barely be a speed bump here and there ... and you will get there faster through education and personal body awareness :)
