Newly diagnosed with herpes, both HSV-1 and HSV-2

Recommended Posts

Have you ever had an actual herpes outbreak on either your mouth or genitals? The expression of a herpes outbreak will look the same, regardless of whether it's HSV-1 or HSV-2. HSV-1 prefers the oral region, but is also commonly found hanging out around the genitals; HSV-2 prefers the genitals 99% of the time. So yes, technically you could have both in one area, but it will all depend.

It'll be impossible to tell which strain of the virus (or both) are showing themselves in your genital episodes. And ultimately it doesn't really change much to know if it's one or the other, besides being able to tell future partners the viral shedding rates based on which strain you have. If you want to know, go get your next episode swabbed by your doctor to see. But ultimately you might have one outbreak that is HSV-1 and then another that's HSV-2. There's not going to be a way to know for sure other than getting each and every episode swabbed and tested.

First off, don't call yourself stupid. It's not nice and I won't put up with it. ;)

Secondly to answer your question, if HSV-1 is showing up as your genital herpes, then there is a chance of your boyfriend getting oral herpes (cold sores, which 80% of Americans have and expose themselves to whenever they kiss someone else); if it's HSV-2 showing up in your genital herpes outbreaks, then there is a 1% chance that he could get oral HSV-2 (only 1% of all oral herpes cases are HSV-2; 99% of oral herpes is HSV-1).
