New to this: how do I know if I'm experiencing a herpes outbreak while on my period?

Recommended Posts

So all this is new to me and I really don't know what to expect or whats to come. I got my period and it's been painful from cramps to it be very tender down there. it feels very uncomfortable even just to wipe..... is this an outbreak? or something else I'm experiencing? never experienced anything like this before.

The hormonal fluctuations of our periods often cause outbreaks - especially when you are recently exposed. Over time your body will get it under control but right now you may have outbreaks with your period. Do you have Valtrex/Acyclovir? If so, maybe you can take it proactively before your period while your body adjusts to it..

Not odd - different Dr's have different ideas about how to manage herpes - what you may want to do is ask for a script for it that you can take if you think you have an outbreak coming ... if you are paying out of pocket get Aycylovir as it's cheaper but does the same job (you just have to take it more often). Hopefully they will give you maybe 6 refills - that way, if you actually break out and find that your periods are the trigger, you can use the Valtrex/Acyclovir for awhile till your body catches up... eventually the OB's may get to a point where it's not worth taking it unless you are in a relationship and you are protecting someone else.
