Myth: People with herpes are always infectious.

Fact: A person with herpes is not always infectious but the virus is occasionally shed from the skin when symptoms are not present. Most of the time when you don’t have symptoms you are not infectious.

So here's the facts - No, you are not ALWAYS infectious. How often you are *possibly* infectious depends on which strain you have and where it is. Here are the shedding (with or without an OB) rates, which will also give you the % of the time you are *possibly* infectious.

 

HSV1 Oral 9-18%

HSV1 Genital 3-5%

HSV2 Oral 1%

HSV2 Gential 15-30%
