Clarification of my HSV test results with a known HSV I infection

Recommended Posts

I recently posted this question on a non-H related forum, and I figured I'd try it here. I searched through old posts and I didn't see anything relating to my question:

I was recently tested for HSV I and HSV II. I've known I've been infected with HSV I (orally) for over 10 years. I received my results as follows:

IgG test results:

HSV I Glycoprotein G Ab: 6.29 H (Positive index value)

HSV II Glycoprotein G Ab: <0.10 (Negative IV)

-- cut off index value is negative for < 0.90.

HSV I/II Combined Ab, IgM test results:

2.97 H (Positive IV)

The IgM test did not separate HSV I and HSV II.

I understand the IgM test is unreliable, but have read a few places it can indicate a new infection.

My question is: Can the positive IgM value indicate that it could be just my reoccurring or reactivated HSV I infection, or does it unequivocally mean I recently became infected with the HSV II virus?

I hope that makes sense, thanks! Abby

Research shows that IgM can reappear in blood tests in up to a third of people during recurrences, and IgM tests cannot accurately distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies, and thus very easily provide a false positive result for HSV-2. So I wouldn't rely on that as any kind of indication of H2 virus in your system.

With the IGG - a conclusive positive result is over 3.0 you are nowhere near that either....

So if you believe you were exposed to the H2 virus, go back in 4-6 months and re-test.

Hope that helps a bit :)
