Hsv 2 positive on blood test but no herpes outbreak

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just want to say ... It's been the toughest month ever since I received the blood test result. I know I have been naive and irresponsible in my actions in the past and I can't blame anyone but me for putting myself in such position. I am literally depressed and almost going insane. I been to the doctor's 7 times and looked at by 5 different doctors ( internist, my own obgyn, infectious disease specialist who is also my primary, ER gyn attending, and ER doctor) who saw no ob and just yeast infection. But I have symptoms like burning left leg that lasted 2 weeks and left groin pain for a week but no lesions or sores ... Believe me I checked and I went to the doc every time I thought I saw something. My hsv2 result falls into a low positive of 2.43 and hsv1 was over 5 . So I read almost everything on medhelp and seems like I need a western blot test to confirm. But I am only 10 weeks to my possible exposure so needless to say Ihave to wait until 16 weeks. My infectious disease doc told me the Elisa test is unreliable and should never be taken without any breakout. She seen the test go from pos and neg again and again.

I just don't know how to properly digest this whole thing. I have discoid lupus and when I am under stress I have rashes popping up everywhere... Go away in 10 mins or so. I know this has nothing to do with herpes but just to let u know how much this has affected me. I can't focus on anything and just praying a lot. I know I can't go on like this so I am wondering if anyone else is going thru this limbo? I stop seeing the guy I was dating in fear I would give herpes to him or he might of giving to me.

Thank you so much for reading and God bless you for being such a big support to those in need. I never knew how complicated all this can be! I am feeling like I am waiting for the other shoe to drop for the outbreak and sincerely overwhelm with guilt of my stupid stupid decisions.

@Scared4this

First - Hello and Welcome

Well, given that you are only a few weeks in the "low positive" isn't surprising.... and the Elisa test it reasonably accurate .. I believe it's about 95% correct. But as you said, whatever test you do will need more time before you will have an accurate result. The HSV1 could be that you've had cold sores as a child.

So - first - put the guilt and blame away ... for one, it won't do you any good, and two, Herpes is an Equal Opportunity virus that many of us (including myself) got on our first sexual encounter, or from a trusted partner who didn't know they had it. We've ALL made a Stupid Decision at some point or other around relationships (sexual, personal or whatever) and sometimes it backfires on us. It's just another learning experience, that's all.

I hate to say it but you may have to just wait till you hit the 16+ week mark. I'd go for another Elisa test first (as the Western Blot can be a nuisance to order because most labs don't offer it... but if you decide to go for it I can give you instruction of how to get it).

The only other thing is to see if something in your spine (mis-alignment, etc) or whatever is causing the pain ... so you may want to see a chiropractor or an neurologist ... it's at least worth removing that as a possible cause...

Hi @Scared4this,

Just wanted to share my experience with initial symptoms, my first OB, and subsequent lab results. In retrospect, after having a very similar MILD outbreak a couple of weeks ago, I've learned that the first time I had symptoms (those similar to a yeast infection), I was just really exhibiting Herpes symptoms or what I now call a mild OB. I just didn't think it was one because I had NO sores, it was mild, and because the symptoms were very similar to those of a yeast infection. My skin felt raw and sore--I knew something was up, because my genitals just didn't feel "right." At the time, I had recently started having unprotected sex with my then-partner, so I assumed my symptoms meant I "caught" something from him. I went and got checked. My test was negative for HSV, other STDS, BV, and yeast. For the next two months, these mild symptoms would show up for a couple of days and then disappear. I would run back to the doctor and get tested. All my results were still negative. I had NO idea what was going on. It wasn't until I got sick with strep throat, and that my immune system was weak, that I had my first sore show up (with others, too). A culture test was done and it came back positive for HSV. My blood work was still negative, though. It was finally positive for HSVII two weeks after the first sore appeared. So, basically, you may just be experiencing mild symptoms. They might be "mild," but since we know our bodies so well, we know when something is wrong or doesn't feel right. I knew it. They are also mild because your body is doing the best it can to keep things under control. When I used to get mild symptoms, I felt bad. Almost as if my body was failing me. But now, I look at it differently because the mild symptoms mean that I'm helping my body work as it should and that it's doing a pretty good job at keeping the OB at bay.

I hope some of that made sense.

Thank u both dancer and hope89. It's great to have someone tell u what u may be expecting. I had a cold when I went to get tested which was July 15 and got my result on 7/18. Even when I had the cold, the doctor visually checked everywhere and saw no signs on 7/15. I then went to my obgyn on 7/ 18 before I called in for my blood test results and she saw nothing but took a pap swab to tame me.

Did u have leg burning feeling and groin pain? I did and it comes and goes but with no lesion or sore. I really don't know what to make of any of these. Obviously I tested positive already so I am just at a loss to just accept it. I am getting the WB test done on 8/22 so I can just be sure.

I feel like a coward to not able to face it ask this literally turned my life upside down but I also know this should define me as a person but I just want to know for sure. Maybe it's reading all these low positive turning into WB negative gives me some hope. I am sorry I want to sound hopeful... I will stop back after my results...I know the good people here will support me thru as I have no idea how to do this. I am praying for everyone and thank you so much for sharing as it means a lot to know I am not alone. God bless, s
