Questions Following First Outbreak

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed almost three weeks ago with a first outbreak. I was incredibly sick with all the flu-like symptoms and had such a sore throat that I could barely swallow. After seeing a regular doctor a few times (and being put on two different antibiotics), I finally ended up in the ER and was told I had Herpes both causing the UTI type symptoms I had been diagnosed with earlier and in my throat. After completing two rounds of antibiotics, then acyclovir, ondansteton, and oxycodone, as well as receiving meds through an IV, I feel like all of the worst symptoms are gone. The sores seem to be scabbing over. But I have been having diarrhea ever since the symptoms first started.

I guess my questions are:

1) Has anyone else experienced diarrhea or is this caused by the medicines?

2) I'm still having lots of itching. Is this normal?

3) From what I've read, getting it in your throat is very rare. Has anyone else had this diagnosis?

Hi and welcome,

1) Diarrhea.. yes, I had it for a long time like 2 weeks. Everything is "solid" now. I thought it is the side effect of the medicine (watch out for the headaches). Maybe, when our bodies are fighting the virus, it can't regulate our digestive system? Idk but it will stop.

2) Itching is normal too. The meds are working for me so no visible outbreaks but sometimes my right thigh and leg itch. Well I thought it is an itch but when I start to itch the area, I immediately notice that it is kind of a nerve pain (like feeling pins and needles along a line). I also felt itchy very very mildly on my arms, feet and neck. But as long as I take vitamin B, these symptoms are very mild.

3) I have the genital hsv 2 but I think I have read some people getting hsv on their throats, you should search the threads.

Did the doctors swab the sores or did they run a blood test?

Your experience sounds a lot like mine. My genital outbreak preceded a terrible sore throat (that became a peritonsillar abscess) by a few days. I never had sores in or on my throat - just a badly infected tonsil. I guess I'll never know if it was hsv of the tonsils since it wasn't tested, but all of my ENT specialists considered it bacterial since it would go away while on antibiotics.

The diarrhea could and is probably totally from the antibiotics. I had that bad after being on rounds and rounds of it last summer - it's a very common antibiotic side effect. It could also be your nerves from being stressed and the immune system stress your body is under. Any way you slice it- it's normal given your situation so nothing to worry about!

For the itching, it will get better. Are you on suppressives?

They do say that hsv2 is uncommon in the throat / mouth, but I did a lot of research last summer given my situation and I can see how it would happen; your body has no immunity and you get a double whammy in both places. It's not supposed to come back often, (every 10 years in research) and the shedding rates are next to nothing. So there's the good news there!

being "infected" doesn't always cause an outbreak. So we can have it with no symptoms and something in our lives like stress could cause it to pop out. Like pop goes the weasel. Some do and some don't have symptoms.thing about flus. When you feel the symptoms your body has just faught it off and getting rid of it after the fact.

Itching can be normal. Just don't go rubbing your eyes.

As for the diarrhea. How were your eating habits when this all had happened? Diarrhea is a sign of your body fighting off an infection, or bad eating/ indigestion and yes medications
