Second herpes outbreak worse than first herpes outbreak?

Recommended Posts

I keep hearing the first herpes outbreak is the worst. My first outbreak was almost unnoticeable, just one tiny painless bump. But my second outbreak is TERRIBLE. For a week now I've had more than two sores that are huge and painful. Why is this happening?! If it matters, I'm also sick with a cold this week.

It's not always the first herpes outbreak; it's the first few outbreaks that are the worst. It's because it's all about the immune system. Within the first 6 months to a year, the body is hard at work building up antibodies against herpes. So it makes sense that your second outbreak is worse since you have a cold. Colds are a dead giveaway that the body's immune system is down. So continue to take care of yourself and allow the body to heal. Over the long run, it will build itself up.
