Is it painful for you to have sex weeks after a herpes outbreak?

My boyfriend and I tried to have sex for the first time since the diagnosis after about 3 weeks post primary OB (5 days after the final sores healed). Sex was so painful we had to stop. Anyone else experience something similar? Is this temporary? Is there anything you can do to minimize the pain? (Sorry if this is TMI)

First - there is NO TMI here ... we are all adults and there is no judgment... we need to be able to be authentic and honest so we can get the answers we need, ok??

 

5 days after primary OB is pretty early ... yes, the sores have healed but the skin is still healing and the area is still pretty traumatized (in that, the body is still fighting the virus ...) and do remember that you should be using condoms right now simply because your body still doesn't have control of it.

 

When you DO try again, use LOTS of lube and if you are into rough sex, you may want to go easy until the body has a chance to get back to something like normalacy. In the meantime, there's a ton of ways to be intimate so that can be a great thing for your relationship in the long run ;)
