Could I have GHSV-1? Scared and confused

Recommended Posts

So I was just diagnosed with HSV-1 about two weeks ago. While I am a bit shocked, it’s possible I had it since child because I’ve gotten fever blisters on my tounge before. However, I can’t seem to feel like it’s a primary infection. Going back to why I got tested….about 3 months ago, I had sex with a new partner who I have been kissing since March. I never noticed any blisters or anything on his lips. A week after that I had a yeast and bv infection. It was treated and all was better. I then stupidly had oral sex again two weeks later. But didn’t have any symptoms of any kind until a month later, started developing yeast infection and bv again. Doc put me on more antibiotics and tested me for all STDs including HSV-1 & 2 via blood work on (5/7). I've had cold sores/fever blisters in my tongue for about 3 weeks now (started 5/6). I also noticed a bump in my vulva area around the time i got the cold sores. Doctor confirmed it looks like some kind of ulcer but non herpes related. She said not too worry. She prescribed me more antibiotics and sent me home. I am done with the antibiotics for yeast and bv infections but still had itching, burning, and tingling down there. My doctor called me with results and said everything came back negative expect for HSV1. So I go back a week later complaining of the itching and burning in my genital area. She checked me again down there and said there were no blisters or signs of HSV2 but went ahead at swabed me for additional testing for yeast or other infections. She suggested I re-test for HSV2 via blood in a few weeks if I wanted peace of mind. This time she prescribed me Famvir 500 mg for the fever blisters since I was still complaining I had them. Since being on the Famvir for 7 days now, my mouth blisters have gotten better, and the itching and burning has lighten up but not completely gone. Is it possible I have GHSV-1 and just haven’t gotten a breakout? Perhaps because I’ve had HSV-1 orally. I am so confused, stressed, and worried about all this. I can’t find peace with my HSV-1 diagnosis either.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and suggestions!

Hello and Welcome!

Well, I hate to tell you but we just plain can't tell you for sure ... it *sounds* like you have some ongoing BV or yeast issue but Herpes is a really sneaky devil and your symptoms *could* be from that ...(and it has nothing to do with you already having it orally ... Herpes doesn't play by normal rules with regards to why some get no OB's ever and a select few get really bad/ongoing ones).

And generally the blisters on the tongue are canker sores ... not herpes ... you can google it but odds they are not herpes ..... herpes only VERY rarely occupies the inside of the mouth.... but canker sores often come up at the same time as cold sores because both respond to stress.

Are you seeing a GP or OBGYN? If it's a GP, I suggest you get to a GYN ASAP .. and next time you have a "blister", get it swabbed... so if nothing else you know if that's your way of breaking out.... Dr's can't and *shouldn't* do visual diagnosis ... there's too many things that go on down there that don't play by any hard and fast rules :(

Thank you for your response @wcsdancer2010. Unfortunately, it is my GYN that has been treating me but doesn't seem to really know what's going on. She keeps giving me antibiotics and yeast creams and it helps for a few days but the itching and burning returns with some discharge. She's convince that my mouth sores are herpes related which is why she prescribed Famvir, but it seems she's not sure what's going on down there. Every test she does comes back negative for yeast, bv, tric, and a few others. I am going to retest for HSV2 in a few weeks but I am worried my results won't be accurate since I am on antivirals. I read that somewhere but not sure if that's true. Do you think I should seek a second opinion?

I'd get the next mouth ulcer swabbed - no use in putting you on a drug based on a VISUAL diagnosis ...

Unfortunately vaginas can be temperamental bitches sometimes ...LOL ..

I would wait till you are 4 months from when you think you got it/had first signs then re-test .... go off the antivirals for about a week beforehand ... that seems to be the time it takes to get them out of the system enough to not skew the numbers from what I've read....

BTW, antibiotics often cause yeast infections, so make sure when you are on them that you also take a probiotic (take the probiotic in between antibiotic doses ... ie, if you take the SB in the morning and the evening, take the PB at lunch) ... that can help to balance out the flora in the area and lessen or stop the yeast bloom.

One thing you may want to do... my daughter got a rare type of chlamydia from a guy she was with (they were together for several years but this came up as soon as they started dating) ... she had ongoing issues and they finally looked into the lesser known possibilities ... so you may want to ask your Dr if there may be something like that that they don't usually test for and see if you can get that test. Unfortunately I don't know what to ask for and I don't know that she would remember the details at this point, but it's worth asking.
