herpes and pregnancy

Hello all,

 

I had a bit of a pregnancy scare recently and although it would have been completely unplanned, the only thing that I was immediately terrified of was giving birth with herpes. How many moms have given birth on here and were successful in not transmitting the virus to their babies? I was diagnosed in march 2014 with ghsv1, so I have had the virus a while now, but once I realized I wasn't pregnant I still can't shake how much this is bothering me. I know that there are many different disabilities, diseases, viruses etc. out there, but if I were to hurt my child because of some STD that I was unlucky enough to catch, I dont know if I could live with myself. I'm not planning on having children for a few years at least....but its just been on my mind lately.

My wife also has herpes. Our oldest daughter was born naturally with no complications. Our youngest was born C-section for reasons not related to herpes. As long as your doctor knows you have it they can be on the lookout for it. He may even put you on an antiviral the last month or so before the due date.

I have 5 gfs that have had kids vaginally, two had one kid each, 1 had 3, two had two each w no issues. They took valtex their last trimester and that was it.

I had my second naturally and she's 26 now and H-free!

 

Just make sure your OBGYN knows - and they will monitor you, and likely put you on Valtrex for the last month to reduce the chance of OB's.... and if there is any sign of an OB then odds are they will do a cesarean... but it's certainly VERY normal for these OBGYN's to deal with and they will help you through it all :)
