Non typical outbreak, healing, and sexual activity

Recommended Posts

So I don't typically get actual lesions anymore. Just irritation and redness. I've been off antivirals for about a month, and am having some mild irritation. So how long do I wait for any sexual activity? To be clear, we're not having intercourse, but if I feel better tomorrow, how long to wait to fool around? I took meds and expect I'll feel better later today or tomorrow. Not clear what to do without actual sores.

That's a tough one but if you are just fooling around, you should be fine. The irritation may just be your system trying to heal ... our lady bits can be really fickle once they are aggravated.

There are plenty of ways to have fun without intercourse :)

I've been a relationship for 4 years with someone who does not have Herpes. I take antivirals(500mg Valacyclovir) daily to keep from passing it but if I miss a few days or run out I usually wait at least a week after restarting a regular regime before having sex, which was what my OBGYN recommended. 4 years and haven't passed it yet so it seems like it works. Hope that helps!

Yes ... every time you have sex, you "traumatize" the vaginal area a little.... the skin has to "toughen up" so to speak and having H just makes the process take longer.

If you have anti-virals, try taking 1 (1 extra if you are on them) before (if you can) or at least immediately after having sex.... just to give your body a little support. If you are trying the natural route, clean the area off soon after, pat with a cold damp facecloth (you may enjoy keeping it there for a few minutes to "cool things off") ... and then maybe try putting something like a zinc, aloe or calendula cream or spray with Bactine... anything to "support" the area in slowing the irritation that seems to activate the virus.....the links below have suggestions for you that may help.

Bottom line - nurture your lady bits after sex and they will appreciate it :)
