The Valtrex commercial

Recommended Posts

Remember a few years ago, they had a commercial with a couple who said the woman had genital herpes and the man didn't and they used Valtrex to help keep it that way? WHY DON'T THEY AIR IT ANYMORE? Or any commercial that approaches the topic? I read a blog just now where completely ignorant people were saying things like it shouldn't be aired because kids can be around or because it encourages irresponsibility. So, we can show tv show after tv show of people falling into bed with each other or shows that approach teen pregnancy but a commercial about a drug that sends the message that it's possible to be happy and healthy with a common virus isn't ok? Kids are seeing things like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom, shows that glorify hard partying and teen pregnancy. Who cares if a commercial comes on about herpes, a virus most of the little angels carry and can spread later when they become sexually active? I feel that taking this commercial off the air furthered the stigma. Thoughts?

Agreed agreed agreed!

We have 5 year olds working the newest cell phones, we have 10 tear olds playing vid games with sexual content, and 13 yr olds dressing like their at a club, and casual sex has been more common than ever, why not air a commercial thats informative on h!?

Actually, the initial advertising by drug companies in the 80's is what caused the stigma ... because people were led to think of genital herpes as being a nasty disgusting thing that you had to protect the world from, like Leprosy....

Odds are the reason they don't advertise it now is ROI (Return on Investment). Drug companies advertise NEW drugs to get enough people asking their Dr's for them to get the ball rolling, and after awhile when all the Dr's are prescribing it as second nature, they don't need to advertise. Simple as that :(

IMO what we need NOW isn't advertising for the drug (never mind that the drug companies REALLY NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR HEALTH) but billboards and pamphlets and radio ads and tv ads EDUCATING people about H. It's something I'm chewing on as a possible project that I may take on in a parallel to the many things that Adrial is doing here. One possibility (that I just haven't had time to properly do some research on ) is to get crowdfunding for this. I need to figure out a plan of how much I will need and which forms will get the quickest bang for the buck ... but it's definitely in the long range plans either way on here. If you want to be involved, let me know. I'll be needing a team of people to help it happen if I take this on myself. ;)

Again, the Big Pharma DOESN'T CARE about our health and well being ... they will only advertise when there will be a good ROI .... the one good thing is that they learned from the past horrid advertisements and made a "better" ad but once Doctors started automatically dispensing their drugs then there was no need for them to continue to advertise :(

@tsv33

This isn't a reason to not take the drugs. Right now they are the best thing we have to protect our partners. However, if we can start a movement of authentic and truthful information, we should be able to reduce the shame and stigma attached to H AND get people to start demanding more and better research and development of other options to reduce or eliminate the virus over time.

lol. im reading this post and thinking of all the Viagra and Cialis commercials no one has an issue with. while I don't hold out any hope of a cure in whats left of my lifetime, I did read an article while booting around the net where a CEO of some Australian pharmaceutical company stated that an at least therapeutic vaccine is a 6 Billion market. so the only thing to count on is their greed.

I agree with you seeker. I don't think anyone will argue that society has skewed priorities. And maybe people should take note that the virus they're all so scared of is one that ranks low on the priority list in the medical community. How many posts have we seen describing utterly dismissive doctors?
