  1. Never used Valtrex, but did use Acyclovir many years ago and it worked great. Famvir is another antiviral on the market. If Valtrex doesn't start working soon you may want to talk to your doctor about that option. Are you still in your first six months of having herpes? Some folks have a real difficult time physically during that period. It will get better though. The lysine is definitely worth a shot. I hope you have good luck with it. Good luck to you. Things will turn out fine.
  2. I have had herpes for close to 29 years now. In the early days I used to get a pin prick feeling before an outbreak. Now all I ever have is itching. But first things first, you need to get diagnosed. If I understand your timeline correctly, you should probably wait another 6-8 weeks to get an IgG blood test done. That will get you to the time period, that if you did get herpes from that encounter, the anantibodies will finally be detectable. Until then study the informational blog, the link to it is above. Read http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. It too is an excellent source of information. As @WCSDancer2010 always advises go to Planned Parenthood or your obgyn, they know herpes far better than most family doctors. Until then try to remain calm. If it does turn out to be herpes you will be fine. You've found the best support forum on the internet. If it turns out to be nothing more than a scare, you will have gotten a good education about herpes.
  3. Being honest may not get you alot of friends, but it will always get you the right ones...John Lennon.
  4. I will second what you just said @2Legit2Quit. Both of these articles are well written and to the point.
  5. The herpes support group I used to attend years ago had a obgyn as a medical advisor. He advised every woman he treated for an sti to get her partner in for an exam and treatment before engaging is sexual activity again.
  6. You are correct @2Legit2Quit. My wife and I both had h before we met. It is easy to get people mixed up around here
  7. As someone who has had herpes just a few years longer than you I'd like to say, Great Post!
  8. My wife also has herpes. Our oldest daughter was born naturally with no complications. Our youngest was born C-section for reasons not related to herpes. As long as your doctor knows you have it they can be on the lookout for it. He may even put you on an antiviral the last month or so before the due date.
  9. Hello @Oldspice, I've had genital herpes since I was 20. It seems like a huge deal now, but in the long run it really isn't. Seems like you need to get confirmation first. If it is herpes its not the end of the world. Sounds like the young woman your seeing now is a keeper. Don't break up with with her just because you may have herpes. You said that she said we can probably work it out either way. Sounds to me like she thinks you're worth it. Study the handouts and ebook you can download from this site. Read thru the Informational Blog. Watch Adrials Videos. Read this http://supporttruthanddialog.com/using-herpes-as-your-wingman/ and the rest of support truth and dialog. Educate yourself about herpes. Believe me, if you have it you can live with it. You still have the potential you've always had. I have 28 years experience with herpes now. Got married, had kids, been working for the same company almost 24 years now. Life is normal. On an unrelated note... Your screen name reminded me of a routine off of Eddie Murphys first comedy album back in 1982. I was in high school when I first heard it and it's still funny to me today. Sounds like you could use a good laugh now...enjoy.
  10. Hello, As someone whose had h 28 years I can tell you that you will be just fine. This is the best place you could have come. Be sure to check out the Informational Blog and Adrials herpes videos. Also check out http://supporttruthanddialog.com/, WCSDancer2010's blog. You can learn a lot from both sites.
  11. Did the survey. Thank you for the work you are doing. Things have come a long way in my 28 years with H.
  12. I understand what a pain in the ass the FDA can be. Here is a link to a story that gives you an idea of why they are the way they are. https://helix.northwestern.edu/article/thalidomide-tragedy-lessons-drug-safety-and-regulation. I don't like what happened with Pritelivir either but I guess it's better to err on the side of caution.
  13. If you have not read the following article check it out http://supporttruthanddialog.com/using-herpes-as-your-wingman/. I think it will be big help to you. Check out the rest of the blog too, it's a very good read.
  14. Here is a link to an article about it https://www.sciencenews.org/article/experimental-herpes-drug-outperforms-first-line-med. Last I knew it is currently in limbo due to some safety concerns.
  15. Hello @CoJo, I have had herpes since I was 20 and I am now almost 49. Learn as much as you can about herpes. Be prepared for many questions. Print out the ebook and handouts and have them available for her. Even if this turns out to be a deal breaker you can at least educate her. If you have not read it already I recommend you check out WCSDancer2010's blog http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. It has tons of great information and advice. Using Herpes as your wingman http://supporttruthanddialog.com/using-herpes-as-your-wingman/ should be required reading for everyone who comes to HOPP. Disclosure is never easy, but as you've read in many of the success stories it is doable. Good luck to you, I hope it works out well for you.
  16. I know I am late to this party so here is 48 year old male who has had herpes since he was 20 perspective. ... Since the only sure fire way to eliminate the risk of transmission is abstinence, and that is obviously not an option for you, the best you can do is reduce the risk. In order for that to have the best chance of working your partner needs to be in on the act. I realized fairly early on that I could not just start having sex with someone without telling them I was hsv positive. It sucks but thats life. Since you are fully aware that you are postive it is up to you to disclose before things go to far. The numbers you quote seem pretty miniscule but shit does happen. Really stop and consider what others have said throughout this thread, especially Adrial and WCSDancer2010. Your not going to find better advice or guidance on this subject any where else.
  17. Here is a link to a list of local support groups https://herpeslife.com/herpes-support-groups/, perhaps one is near you. I first went to one back in 1996. It was a friendly and non-judgemental environment. Up to date information is available. You will meet folks from the newly diagnosed to the 20+ year veteran. No membership fees, you don't even have to use your real name.
  18. Last October I had an IGG test run 27 years after my first outbreak and it came back positive for hsv2 at 5.00. I was in the military when I first got herpes and they would never run a blood test for it. They would only swab outbreaks. The three outbreaks I had swabbed all came back negative. I don't believe the test can pinpoint exactly how old an infection is. You can mainly conclude that you were infected at least 4 months or more ago. Not sure if the test result number would give any clues.
  19. Hello @Kbutterfly, As a 28 year veteran of herpes I can tell you what your feeling is pretty normal for someone newly diagnosed. Take some comfort in knowing you are on the right path. You found this site and you are reaching out. Go thru the Informational Blog on this site. Lots of great articles and videos that can give you a good education about herpes and living with herpes. If you have not found it already this is @WCSDancer2010's blog http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. I for one recommend everyone who reads this check it out if you have not already done so. If there is a local support group near you try to attend a meeting or two. It really helped me out years ago. Actually talking with others face to face was a huge relief. Hope this helps you. You will be fine once the shock wears off.
  20. Way back when I first got herpes I had three different outbreaks swabbed and they all came back as negative. The last of those was swabbed when the outbreak was less than 24 hours old. It was after that last swab that I finally got to talk to a doctor.( I was in the military at the time. Before talking to this doctor all I ever dealt with were corpsmen.) The doctor examined the outbreak visually then proceeded to ask many, many questions about my outbreaks. He finally told me that he believed from what he saw and the answers I gave to his questions that I had herpes. He said 30% of herpes cases will not test positive. I can only assume he meant by the swab test. The military would not do a blood test for herpes. It was not until this past October that I had an IgG test done. It showed I was positive for HSV2. I'm not sure how accurate that 30% figure is. That was over 25 years ago now, he may have just been blowing smoke up my ass. If it is an accurate figure that could explain the negative results if in fact it is herpes your dealing with.
  21. @2Legit2Quit, I never said that you said it was disqualifying. On my last post in this thread I was talking more about what I read at the link you posted than anything. It was a list of medical disqualifiers for military service. Obviously from what I read on the link a lot of stuff is not strictly enforced. I cited the hydrocele as something that could have, according to the list, kept me from joining. I informed the doctor, he examined me, made his notation in my record then proceeded with the rest of the exam. I went on to serve 4 years in the Marines. My dad has a deviated septum that the doctors missed during his induction physical for the Navy. If they had caught it then he would never have gone to flight training and earned his Naval Aviator wings. At another physical a few years later the doctor caught it. Since dad never had trouble breathing at altitude the doctor signed him off, and dad kept flying for the rest of the time he was in. I know that things in the military change all the time. As they say, the more things change the more they stay the same.
  22. @JDKJD, I have to agree with @2Legit2Quit about the friction and/or reaction to the lube. I was a 16 year old male once myself. As a matter of fact on my last birthday I turned 16 for the third time. Never used sex toys. Back then the best I could do was Rosy Palmer and her five sisters and a couple girly magazines. I did manage a nice little friction sore once, so I really wouldn't get to worried about what's going on now. If seeing a doctor would give you peace of mind do it. Take this opportunity to educate yourself about herpes and STD's in general. I'm pretty sure in the end this will just be a nice little wake up call.
  23. I read the list at the link posted by @2Legit2Quit. I believe you would have to have a very extreme case for it to be disqualifying, like a constant outbreak that never goes away. If thats the case you got a more serious problem than herpes. In the list for male genitalia Hydrocele is listed. I have one. It was discovered by an old doctor during physical I took for a job I got at Sears. 3 or 4 months later I took my induction physical. I mentioned it to the doctor, he checked my scrotum, made a notation in my record and continued on with the rest of the exam. It obviously was no big deal. As I said earlier in this thread you don't really have to disclose with the recruiter. Disclosing to the doctor at your induction physical should be strongly considered. You already have a diagnosis from your doctor and I would assume a copy of your test results. Showing this to the induction doctor would get it entered into your military medical record. The only testing the US military does for herpes is a swab. They do not do a blood test for herpes. No reason to go thru the hassle of another swab. If after you are in on active duty and frequent outbreaks become a problem, you should be able to obtain a prescription with relative ease.
  24. Hello, I have had herpes 28 years now. I just got an out break today for the first time in at least 18 months maybe longer...ugh... I noticed you said this started about the same time you got your current partner. This may be out there but I thought of something I saw on The Doctors, the daytime show. A woman was having vaginal rashes and the like but all the std tests were negative. It was finally figured out that she was allergic to her husbands semen. According to a doctor on the show this is somewhat common. Then again, if you all always use condoms this probably would not be likely. Might see if your doctor can run some test and see if you may have a hormone imbalance, especially if you may be around the age menopause. I know some women in that stage of life can experience more frequent outbreaks for a time. Hang in there, I hope things settle down for you soon.
