  1. This subject comes up from time to time in this forum. As someone who got herpes while in the military I can tell you its not really an issue. It will not disqualify you from joining. I would say it is not something you need to disclose to your recruiter. You might want to consider telling the doctor at your induction physical so it can be notated in your medical record. That would make it easier to get a prescription for an antiviral if you ever have issues with outbreaks in the future.
  2. Hello, 28 year veteran of herpes here. Herpes can be tricky. Its possible you've had it for some time now, its possible your boyfriend has had it all this time too. 80% of those with herpes don't know they have it. If the blood test comes back positive then he has had it over 4 months. If your blood test comes back positive you've had it over 4 months also. It takes about that long for the antibodies to be detectable. Your kidney infection probly stressed your immune system which could have triggered an outbreak. A CT scan and xrays wont find herpes. A blood test will but you have to be looking for it. Herpes is not tested for in a standard STD panel or any other blood test unless you specifically ask for it. The IgG test is the one that can find the antibodies. You have come to the right place to find information and support. In the long run things will be ok.
  3. Actually, I have not taken an antiviral in nearly 20 years. Since my wife is also H+ there has been no real need for it. I was also told by the first doctor that prescribed Acyclovir for me that it was an extremely safe drug. I never had any side effects other than one bout of diarrhea, and that may have just been coincidental. It was also very effective for me. I agree with what @fitgirl said about the liver risk. Her doctor can order tests to check her liver function. If the results are good I don't see the continued use of antivirals to be a problem. Like fitgirl said though, ultimately it is up to both of you to decide. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you and your girl.
  4. Starting out saying herpes is way creepier than you ever imagined is not good. Too many people are ignorant about herpes as it is. Saying something like that doesn't help, kind of helps reinforce a stereotype I think. I have no issue really with the facts that are presented, from what I can tell they are fairly accurate. I just felt the young lady came acrossed as a little valley girlish...grody to the max. Then again I may be an old stick in the mud...just thought it could have been presented better than it was.
  5. Yep, the way this was presented was the big probbem here.
  6. Hello @lostgirlx, This is a link to @WCSDancer2010's blog http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. It is worth a read if you haven't read it already. It has lots of good info and tips about living with herpes. I got herpes while in the military back in the 80's. So as you know it is not a disqualifier as far as medical conditions go. As far as the recruiter goes, remember, he has alot of recruits and prospective recruits to deal with. You may have just got lost in the shuffle and the herpes disclosure had nothing to do with it. After I got out of boot camp I got an extra 10 days at home by becoming an assistant to my recruiter. I helped him with his paperwork and talking with guys interested in joining. Its a very busy job believe me.
  7. Not really herpes related but this is too funny. Since the majority of posters on this forum are female I thought you'd enjoy this. http://m.youtube.com/results?q=beware%20of%20the%20doghouse&sm=3
  8. I have to agree with kiwiguy and fitgirl. The doctor who first prescribed acyclovir for me said it was one of the safest drugs out there.
  9. LOL cushion for the pushin... there is a song about that...Ladies and Gentlemen...Spinal Tap....
  10. As a 28 year vetran of herpes I just wanted to second WCSDancer2010's comment. Educating yourself about H is the most important first step in learning to live with it.
  11. I took Acyclovir suppresivly for about three months way back in 1990. Other than a single bout of diarrhea I had no other side effects. I also had zero outbreaks during that time. I believe as far as the liver goes you should be ok unless you already have issues with it. Hopefully your doctor would be more knowledgeable about that.
  12. I already left a comment at youtube but I wanted to add that the way you have dealt with this situation is the very definition of "taking the bull by the horns". Wish I could be more open, but being married to someone not quite as willing to come out of the closet kind of keeps me in there too. Once again, great job!
  13. Hello @kozy, Way way back I experienced the same side effects while taking Acyclovir. Luckily it was only a one time experience. I never had any other negative experience with it. Took it suppresivly for three months and never had an outbreak. If it keeps up another day or two you might cut back a little on the dosage for a little while. If that doesn't work I would contact the doctor.
  14. Hello @nat87, As someone who has had herpes for 28 years I can tell you life will go on and you can have that husband and family. Luckily you have found the best place there is for information and support. Check out the videos and the Informational Blog. I highly recommend you read this blog http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. The most important thing you can do now is educate yourself about herpes. You are at the worst part of having herpes right now, diagnosis and its immediate afermath. Once you know the facts and figure out how it will effect you physically over time things will work themselves out. In the grand scheme of things herpes is really a very minor thing.
  15. Sounds to me like you did what you should have done. I had 3 different swab tests come back negative. It was not until after the last one that I was finally seen by a doctor. After he examined the lesion and thoroughly interogated me he finally said what I had was herpes. 27 years later I finally had an IgG test that confirmed HSV2. False negative test results are probably common. Until that doctor told me I had herpes I thought it had to be something else. You can tell your fiancé that you are not the only person to ever fall victim to a false negative herpes test.
  16. As a 28 year veteran of herpes I can tell you that this is the best site you can find for information and support. Read thru the succes stories. Check out this blog I have left a link for http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. Be there for her. Things will be ok in the end.
  17. My pleasure @WCSDancer2010. I think your blog has information that I would consider the gold standard of dealing with H.
  18. Amen @kiwiguy. I'm just now hitting the 28 year mark, wish this site had been around all those years ago. People today are lucky to have all this available to them.
  19. Here is a link to a list of support groups http://herpeslife.com/herpes-support-groups/. Googleing Herpes Support Sacramento may turn one up. If one is not available in Sacramento check to see if one is within a 2 or 3 hour drive of Sacramento. I used to attend the now defunct group in Kansas City years ago. It was not unusaul for some people to make a 2 or 3 hour drive to attend a meeting. It may take some planning a month or two in advance.
  20. No, you don't have to limit yourself like that. Here is a link to WCSDancer 2010's blog.http://supporttruthanddialog.com/. The most recent entry is about online dating. The entire blog is well worth your time to read if you have not already. The entry about herpes being your wingman should be required reading for all hsv+ people out there in the dating world.
  21. I remember reading an article just before Rogaine hit the market place that said 90% of all human males will experiance some degree of hair loss during their lifetime. I started noticing thinning in my hair at 35, I recently turned 48. Baldness runs on both sides of my family so I'm guessing its more genetic then anything else. Do you experiance alot of stress? It definatly causes outbreaks and I know some people believe it can cause hair loss too. As far as the Famvir causing hair loss, no idea. I used to take acyclovir when I was in my 20's and never noticed hair loss. Could be you've just hit that point in life when the body changes anyways. You start losing hair, you put on a few extra pounds, notice a few gray hairs, fine print gets a lot more blurry...
  22. I don't remember having constant irritation all the time. I did have frquent outbreaks, but once they cleared up I was ok. Went thru a period when I had a red spot on my shaft. I had outbreaks there but it never bothered me between outbreaks. After about a year or 18 months it went away. As much as it sucks you may have to ride it out for awhile longer. Have you tried suppressive therapy with antivirals? I had a suppressive prescription of Acyclovir for three months once and that seemed to help. Have you been back to the doctor to see if anything else may be going on? If you haven't already check out WCSDancer2010 blog Support Truth & Dialog. Great info on how to deal with this. I would post a link but my tucking fablet is not cooperating tonight. Good luck I hope you can find some relief.
  23. In regards to the person who approached you, you can't fix stupid but duct tape can muffle the sound...
